Laboring for the Lord in the Ordinary

There is a kind of work that rarely gets applause.

The dishes that seem to multiply overnight. The laundry that is folded only to be unfolded again. The meals that took time to prepare but are eaten in ten minutes. The floors that need sweeping for what feels like the hundredth time. The work we do at our jobs, in our homes, in our gardens, for our families, and for the people God has placed around us.

Much of life is made up of ordinary work.

And sometimes I wonder if we have made the mistake of believing that only the big things we do for God really matter.

But Scripture gives us a very different picture.

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Whatever you do.

Not just ministry. Not just Bible study. Not just serving at church. Not just the things that look spiritual.

Whatever you do.

God cares about the way we approach the seemingly insignificant work of everyday life. When we understand that, even the most mundane tasks can become an act of worship.

The Work Nobody Sees Still Matters

One of the hardest things about ordinary work is that so much of it is unseen.

Nobody applauds the mother who gets up early to make breakfast. Nobody hands out awards for patience when a toddler has their fifth meltdown of the morning. Nobody sees the prayers whispered while folding tiny clothes or driving to school. Nobody may ever know how many times you chose kindness when you were exhausted.

But God sees.

And if we are doing these things faithfully for Him, they are not insignificant.

Jesus spent the majority of His earthly life living what appeared to be an incredibly ordinary life. Before His public ministry, He worked with His hands, lived in a home, ate meals, walked dusty roads, and lived among ordinary people.

That reminds me that ordinary does not mean meaningless.

The world tells us that our value is found in how impressive our work looks, how many people see it, or how much recognition we receive from it.

The Lord asks something different.

Are you doing it for Me?

The same task can become something completely different when our purpose changes.

I can clean my house because I feel like I am constantly behind—or I can clean it as an act of love and stewardship.

I can make dinner because everyone expects me to—or I can make it with gratitude that God has given me people to feed.

I can go to work simply to earn a paycheck—or I can see my work as an opportunity to serve faithfully with the abilities God has given me.

I can care for my children because it is my responsibility—or I can recognize that I have been entrusted with souls to nurture, teach, love, and point toward Christ.

The work may not change.

But the heart behind the work can.

Let Everything Be Done for Him

1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Whatever you do.

There is something beautiful about realizing that our entire lives can be offered to the Lord.

We don’t have to wait for a grand opportunity to serve Him.

We can serve Him today.

In the kitchen.
At the office.
In the nursery.
In the garden.
Behind the steering wheel.
While answering emails.
While cleaning toilets.
While disciplining children.
While caring for a home.
While showing patience to someone who is difficult to love.

These things may feel small, but faithfulness is rarely glamorous.

And perhaps that is part of the point.

God is not asking us to build impressive lives so that other people will notice us. He is asking us to be faithful with what He has placed directly in front of us.

So today, whatever your hands find to do, do it for Him.

Wash the dishes for Him.
Do your work for Him.
Love your family for Him.
Serve your neighbor for Him.
Care for your home for Him.
Work diligently even when nobody is watching.

Because ultimately, we are not laboring for the approval of people. We are laboring for the Lord.

And when our work is offered to Him, even the most ordinary moments become sacred.

The goal isn’t to do something impressive.

The goal is to be faithful.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23
